It was a very disappointing round of opening fixtures for the Algerians in the Champions League this week, with not a single one winning their match in Europe’s elite club competition.
Tuesday night saw Sofiane Hanni make his first ever appearance in the group stage of the tournament as captain of Anderlecht. However, they were reduced to ten players in the first half and eventually lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich.
On Wednesday, there were plenty more Algerians in action with more debuts.
Rachid Ghezzal came off the bench as a substitute for Monaco to play in the Champions League for the first time, in the 83rd minute and his team drew 1-1 away to German side RB Leipzig.
There were some very poor results for other Algerian footballers around the continent however. Yacine Brahimi, who was making his 20th appearance in the Champions League, lost 3-1 at home to Turkish champions Besiktas. Brahimi had a great chance in the second half, but sent his shot flying over the crossbar.
Adam Ounas was not even on the bench for Napoli for their trip away to Ukraine, where they were taking on Shakhtar Donetsk. Faouzi Ghoulam started, but unfortunately his team lost 2-1 after a big defensive mistake by the Algerian.
