It has been confirmed by Napoli that defender Faouzi Ghoulam will miss the rest of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament rupture sustained to the left-back’s right knee.
This is a huge blow to the league leaders in Italy, and the instant impact of the injury to the Algerian international was shown as Napoli went from winning to losing in the Champions League against Manchester City.
A statement on the official Napoli website said: “Faouzi Ghoulam underwent tests this morning in Villa Stuart, Rome that confirmed a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament on his right knee.”
It ended by saying: “The defender will return for an operation tomorrow.”
The injury to Ghoulam also means that he has had to withdraw from Rabah Madjer’s first national team squad, and he will be replaced by Chemseddine Nessakh of Setif.
Ghoulam has been a vital part of the Napoli side that currently leads the league table in Serie A, and there was talk of a potential move to the Premier League in January with both Chelsea and Manchester City interested in him.
With two goals and three assists in Italy this season, the Neapolitans will find it extremely hard to replace him.
