Rabah Madjer and the Algerian Football Federation have made contact with Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar over the possibility of representing the North Africans at international level. However, it is understood that despite making contact with the 19-year-old, Aouar is still undecided on whether to pick France or Algeria.
The Lyon Academy has a history of producing Franco-Algerian players, with the likes of Karim Benzema and Nabil Fekir previously picking France, whilst other footballers through the system such as Rachid Ghezzal and Yassine Benzia picking the Desert Foxes.
Aouar has broken through the first team this season at the Stade de Gerland, scoring two goals in ten games from midfield. But he wants to focus on his club football before making a final decision on his international future.
The youngster is said to have described the approach by the Algerian FA as “an honour”, and we can only hope that Aouar makes the decision to choose to play under Rabah Madjer as opposed to Didier Deschamps. Besides, a realistic Aouar knows it is almost impossible to break into the French midfield right now.
Algeria do not have any competitive games until October 2018, due to the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers being postponed from March.
