The central defender’s mother is Algerian, and Benatia’s defensive solidity and threat from set pieces would have been a huge boost to the Algerian national team.

The Napoli man is currently one of the best full-backs in world football.

MF: Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)

MF: Zinedine Zidane (France)

We all know about Zizou. Born to Algerian parents in France, he went onto lift the World Cup.

MF: Samir Nasri (France)

Nasri was born to Algerian parents as well, but opted to pick the French national team. He won the Premier League with Manchester City.

MF: Yacine Brahimi (Algeria)

Brahimi assisted the famous goal at the 2014 World Cup which sent Algeria to the last 16 for the first time in their history.

FW: Nabil Fekir (France)

Fekir came through the Lyon academy and had orignally opted for Algeria, before switching to the country of his birth.

FW: Karim Benzema (France)

Benzema has always stated that his heart is Algerian, but chose against representing the country of his parents in order to have a chance of winning trophies at international level.

FW: Kylian Mbappe (France)

Born to an Algerian mother and a Cameroonian father, Mbappe’s background is very similar to that of the goalkeeper M’Bolhi.
