Yacine Brahimi and FC Porto suffered a disappointing 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 encounter. The Algerian winger was making his 28th appearance in Europe’s elite club competition.
Sadio Mane broke the deadlock in the 25th minute for the Premier League side. Although it was a tame effort at goal from the Senegalese winger, Porto goalkeeper Jose Sa made a real mess of the shot as it bounced off of him into the back of the net.
Just four minutes later, Mohamed Salah doubled the lead for the visitors after James Milner’s curling strike came off the post and into the path of Liverpool’s number 11 who finished from two yards out and doubled the lead.
As Porto pushed forward and looked to get back into the tie, Liverpool countered and Roberto Firmino’s shot was parried poorly by Sa into the path of Mane for his second goal in the 53rd minute.
Brahimi was then substituted just after the hour mark. He failed to get the better of defender Alexander-Arnold and then tried to attack Liverpool from a more central position, but eventually ran out of steam.
Roberto Firmino piled on the misery for Porto as he scored a fourth goal in the 70th minute, and Mane got his hat-trick with a super strike from long range late on. Porto and Brahimi will travel to Anfield for the second leg in three weeks time, with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals of the competition.
