Riyad Mahrez’s final hopes of silverware this season ended after losing 2-1 in extra-time against Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Alvaro Morata gave the visitors the lead just before half-time on the counter. Leicester were bursting forwards, but a poor pass by Kelechi Iheanacho went behind Mahrez, instead of in front of him, and Willian broke. The Brazilian played in Morata who scored his first goal of 2018.
The Foxes equalised in the 76th minute through Jamie Vardy. Mahrez did brilliantly to skip past Marcos Alonso and burst into the penalty area. He squared the ball back to Vicente Iborra, but his strike was saved only as far as Vardy who bundled the ball home.
After a stalemate following the regulatory 90 minutes, the encounter went to extra-time. A mistake by Kasper Schmeichel gave substitute Pedro an empty net to head into, and restore the lead for Antonio Conte’s side.
Leicester huffed and puffed in the second period of extra-time, and Mahrez went close with a powerful shot that was blocked in the box. But it was Chelsea who advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Algerian has just one goal and one assist in eight appearances against the West Londoners in total now.
