Rabah Madjer suffered a devastating defeat as Algeria lost 2-1 to World Cup bound Iran at the UPC Arena in Graz, Austria.
Iran took the lead after just 12 minutes, and it was similar goal to Tanzania’s last week. Sardar Azmoun scored a header and beat Faouzi Chaouchi at his near post.
And it was not long until Carlos Queiroz’s team doubled their lead. In the 19th minute, Mehdi Taremi managed to walk his way through the Algerian defence and dribble into the path of the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Sofiane Hanni was rather embarrassingly taken off after just 30 minutes as Les Verts switched to a three at the back system.
The Desert Foxes pulled a goal back in the second half. A fantastic cross by Mokhtar Benmoussa was headed in by Farouk Chafai soon after the interval. Great link-up play between the two USM Alger defenders.
Islam Slimani came on in the 64th minute for his first footballing appearance since January, but was swiftly shown a yellow card.
Algeria became frustrated as the game came to a close, with Soudani, Mandi and Bounedjah all getting booked. Madjer then made the strange decision to take off Mahrez whilst the North Africans were chasing the game, which ended in defeat for Algeria.
