African powerhouses TP Mazembe took on Algerian side MC Alger in the group stages of the CAF Champions League today, with the match ending in a 1-0 victory for the hosts.
Mazembe dominated the first half in DR Congo, with MC Alger struggling to keep any possession of the football.
Mouloudia’s best chance of the first half was wasted. In the 42nd minute, Sofiane Bendebka played a clever pass to set up Walid Derrardja, but the forward slipped and missed the ball as he was getting his shot away.
The second half saw the Algerians play on the counter attack, with Derrardja having another good opportunity.
Despite dominating the ball, Mazembe struggled to create several clear cut chances and Farid Chaal had a comfortable game in goal. Chaal continued to waste time with the ball towards the end of the game in order to run the clock down.
However, in the 88th minute Mazembe snatched a late winner. Meschack finished calm and composed to beat Chaal after he was played through whilst Hachoud was sleeping at the back post.
In the end, a draw was probably fair and the Algerians will be gutted. The result leaves Bernard Casoni’s side in 2nd place in the group, on four points.
