Algeria’s national team could have been so much stronger over the past few years, if the following footballers had chosen to represent the Desert Foxes at international level:
GK – RAIS M’BOLHI
The legendary goalkeeper has played at two World Cups for Algeria, and won the man of the match award in the last 16 against Germany four years ago.
RB – YURI BERCHICHE
Berchiche has an Algerian father, but opted not to represent Algeria. He can still do so, as the PSG full-back has yet to appear for a nation at full international level.
CB – MEHDI BENATIA
Benatia also has an Algerian mother, but chose the nation of his father and went on to represent the Moroccan national team. He could have solved the Desert Foxes’ defensive problems.
CB – AISSA MANDI
Mandi is one of the world’s best and upcoming central defenders, helping Real Betis to Europa League football in La Liga.
LB – FAOUZI GHOULAM
Ghoulam is highly regarded as one of the best left-backs in world football. He is not far away from a big move.
CDM – ZINEDINE ZIDANE
The now Real Madrid manager was born in France to an Algerian mother and an Algerian father. However, he went to go on to play for the country of his birth. His parents are from the Kabylie region of Algeria.
LM – SAMIR NASRI
Born in France to an Algerian mum and Algerian dad, Nasri also slipped through the fingers of Algeria. He went on to win the Premier League with Man City.
RM – RIYAD MAHREZ
Another player now at Manchester City, Mahrez is the current poster boy of Algerian football and recently became the most expensive African footballer of all time.
CAM – NABIL FEKIR
The infamous story of Fekir’s nationality is still raw with many Algerians. Born in France to Algerian parents, Fekir originally intended to play for Algeria before switching to the French.
ST – KARIM BENZEMA
Benzema, like Zidane, is of Algerian descent. The striker was born in France to a mother from Oran and a father from Tigzirt. He went onto to become one of the best forwards in world football.
ST – KYLIAN MBAPPE
Mbappe was also born in France, but to an Algerian mother (Fayza Lamari) and a Cameroonian father. The youngster is tipped to be one of the biggest stars of world football in the future.
