Algerian international Riyad Mahrez is an early doubt for the Community Shield against Chelsea after suffering an ankle injury against Bayern Munich.
The winger was starting in Man City’s final game of the International Champions Cup against the Germans, and was brought down by American youngster Chris Richards.
Mahrez should have had a penalty, but the referee waved play on. However, Mahrez stayed down holding his ankle in the opening few minutes.
He then continued for around 20 minutes before going down holding his ankle again, and limped off in the 28th minute to be replaced by Bernardo Silva.
We are still unsure if Mahrez was substituted as a precaution, or if it he could no longer carry on. Either way, he did try to carry on before coming off.
The 27-year-old would have been a certain starter for the curtain raiser against Chelsea next week at Wembley Stadium, however this ankle problem has thrown that into doubt.
Pep Guardiola spoke in the press conference after the game, saying that he does not know the extent of Mahrez’s injury or how serious it is.
Mahrez started in all three of Man City’s pre-season friendlies and showed promise with his dangerous dribbling and created several chances for the team.
