Once dubbed as the next Karim Benzema, many Algerian fans were extremely excited at the prospect of Yassine Benzia. Having come through the Lyon academy system too, there were many similarities between the two of them already being made.
With the help of the legendary former FAF President Mohamed Raouraoua, the young attacker opted to play for the Algerian national team at the start of 2016. In the same year, he scored his first goal for Algeria against Seychelles.
However, it has now been over two years since the 23-year-old has been picked for the national team. He has since moved on from Lyon to Lille, which he captained at the age of 22. A remarkably impressive feat for such a young age at such a big club.
As his career has progressed so far, Benzia has moved from being a main striker to an attacking central midfielder. In addition, he now plays regular football at a decent level in Ligue 1 and I think Benzia is a hidden gem for Algerian football.
Another gift left by Raouraoua, I hope he is recalled into the Belmadi setup as the North Africans begin their qualification campaign for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. This season, he already has one assist in two matches.
