Algeria were held to a 1-1 draw in controversial circumstances against Gambia in Djamel Belmadi’s first game in charge of the national team.
Before a ball was even kicked, there were huge problems as the game was delayed by one hour and a half due to too many supporters being inside the stadium. The solution was to have thousands of Gambian fans standing on the running track to watch the match. The Algerian subs then had to sit on the grass as there was n0t enough space.
A quiet first half saw Riyad Mahrez go close as he cut inside onto his left foot and curled a shot just wide of the goal.
The second half burst into life with two goals in two minutes. Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a brilliant solo goal as he went round the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into an empty net for his 4th national team goal in 2018.
But just one minute later, Ceesay equalised for the hosts as the Algerian back-line switched off. The result moves Algeria onto four points from two matches and Belmadi will be very happy to get something in the terrible playing conditions and leave with no injuries.
