It feels like yesterday that it was Sunday 7th October, and a late penalty was awarded to Manchester City at Anfield after Van Dijk brought down Sane.
Riyad Mahrez stepped up to take the spot kick, with several of City’s regular takers not on the playing field at the time.
And although it was an impressive clean sheet, City will have felt disappointed not to take all three points having been presented with the opportunity to.
The Algerian’s penalty flew over the bar, which means he has now missed six of his last ten penalties.
Mahrez later explained what he tried to do, stating “I made the decision to shoot in the middle, but the ball went up.”
It was also rumoured that Gabriel Jesus wanted to take, but Mahrez was the man who had the “courage and the balls to take such a penalty” according to manager Pep Guardiola.
But naturally, the right winger was very disappointed to miss. John Stones described him as “deflated” in the dressing room after the match.
However, Mahrez now has seven goals and six assists for Man City and will hope to be given the chance to make amends tonight with Man City hosting Liverpool at the Etihad.
