Egypt have been confirmed as hosts for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, beating South Africa to the rights to host. This will be the first summer edition, with 24 teams as well as VAR.
The decision comes as bad news to Algeria, who have never won an AFCON match in Egypt and have never gone past the group stage when the competition has been in Egypt. As fierce North African rivals, it is difficult to see the Desert Foxes going far in the tournament.
Egypt last hosted in 2006, where Algeria did not even qualify. In 1986, Algeria went out the group and in 1974, Algeria did not qualify either. The Pharaohs must surely now be considered as heavy favourites, with the home advantage and Mohamed Salah in their ranks.
Algeria have not faced Egypt since the semi-finals of AFCON 2010, where Algeria got three red cards and lost 4-0 in what was surely one of the most corrupt matches of all time.
