Algeria draw first game of 2019 thanks to Abeid’s goal

Algeria drew their first game of 2019 with a 1-1 draw against Gambia in the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida.

Adam Ounas wanted a penalty early on, but was booked for simulation with the Cameroonian ref adjudging him to have dived.

Dijon midfielder Mehdi Abeid scored his first goal for the Desert Foxes with a brilliant close range finish after being setup by Ismael Bennacer of Empoli in the 42nd minute.

Manager Djamel Belmadi opted to rest key players such as Riyad Mahrez, Sofiane Feghouli and Baghdad Bounedjah in order to experiment some new footballers ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Several supporters did not show up to the game as part of an anti-political protest against President Bouteflika.

Gambia struggled to even muster a shot on goal with the North African side completely dominating possrsion of the football from start to finish, yet they found a late equaliser.

Adam Ounas had an outstanding game with his dribbling ability and was unlucky not to score on several occasions. Zakaria Naidji and Mohamed Benkhemassa both came on in the second half.

The result means that Algeria win Group D with 11 points. Gambia fail to qualify for the competition in Egypt this summer. Their next game is a friendly against Tunisia on Tuesday 24th March.
