There are just over 80 days until the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, with manager Djamel Belmadi having to make some tough decisions for his 23-man squad. Here are Dean Ammi’s 23 players.
Goalkeepers: Rais Mbolhi, Azzedine Doukha, Alexandre Oukidja
Belmadi has made it very clear with his choices that these are his preferred picks to be in between the sticks.
Defenders: Ramy Bensebaini, Mehdi Tahrat, Aissa Mandi, Djamel Benlamri, Faouzi Ghoulam, Mohamed Fares, Youcef Attal, Hocine Benayada
Four central defenders and four full-backs seems the most sensible. Benayada deserves a call after his fine domestic performances with CS Constantine.
Midfielders: Riyad Mahrez, Adam Ounas, Yacine Brahimi, Said Benrahma, Nabil Bentaleb, Mehdi Abeid, Ismael Bennacer, Sofiane Feghouli, Sofiane Hanni
The central midfield is weak, but Abeid and Bennacer could be the future together. Houssem Aouar should go if he picks Algeria at international level. If not, then Hanni should be the one which allows Algeria the choice of a central attacking midfielder.
Forwards: Baghdad Bounedjah, Ishak Belfodil, Islam Slimani
Bounedjah should be first choice. Algeria play one striker up front so the Desert Foxes do not need to take more than three to Egypt. Slimani should go as a Plan B option because of his aerial threat.
