Man City winger Riyad Mahrez visited a children’s hospital in Oran, Algeria before his first training session with the Algerian national team this week.
Mahrez, who enjoyed winning four trophies this season with his club including the Premier League title, showed great community spirit as he gave out presents to kids that mainly suffered from cancer.
He took the time to meet the families, pose for photographs and play with the children whilst in his homeland. He told Algerian TV that it was “great to give back to the community”.
The idea of the initiative is to not only give the kids a fun day, but to also raise publicity and awareness of the issue in Algeria with many hospitals understaffed and in poor working conditions.
Mahrez is part of a 23-man Algeria squad that will compete for at AFCON 2019 this summer. Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura is the only other footballer called up from English footballer. Rachid Ghezzal and Said Benrahma were overlooked.
Algeria will play two friendlies before the competition starts. The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on June 21st with Egypt against Zimbabwe. Follow the Algerian national team as well as the tournament in English with DZ Football.
