The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is just around the corner, and many Algerian fans around the world are getting ready to support their national team. Djamel Belmadi watched on as Algeria played two friendlies in Qatar as preparation. Here is what we learnt from them.
Mandi and Benlamri partnership
Belmadi seems set and more comfortable on having Aissa Mandi and Djamel Benlamri as the central defensive partnership. Mandi is the best passer of the ball in the defence, whilst Benlamri is the best tackler. They both played together in the friendlies against Burundi and Mali.
Youcef Belaili has to start
Belaili was by far the best player in the two friendly matches. He scored one goal and provided two assists on the back of winning the CAF Champions League with Esperance for the second year in a row. It looks like he may well occupy the left wing position and this would mean moving Yacine Brahimi to a more central role.
Feghouli does not fit system
I still cannot see how Sofiane Feghouli fits into Belmadi’s system. He is naturally a right winger but cannot play there as Riyad Mahrez will occupy that position. Feghouli does not look fully comfortable as a central midfielder and it looks more composed with Bennacer and Abeid in the middle.
