Algeria began their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-0 win against Kenya in Cairo at the 30th June Stadium thanks to goals from Baghdad Bounedjah and Riyad Mahrez on Sunday night.
The Desert Foxes started the game brilliantly, with Bounedjah almost scoring after the first minute. But eventually he did get the opening goal. After 34 minutes, Youcef Atal burst into the box and was brought down. The Al Sadd striker stepped up and coolly slotted away the spot kick.
And just before half-time, the North African side doubled their lead. A brilliant pass by Empoli midfielder Ismael Bennacer set up Riyad Mahrez who finished with his left foot in front of goal to put the game to bed.
In the second half, Algeria controlled the match. Yacine Brahimi, Andy Delort and Mehdi Abeid all came on as substitutes showing the strength in depth in the national team squad.
Algeria go top of Group C on virtue of the yellow cards rule after one game. Senegal are also on three points. Kenya and Tanzania both suffered opening game defeats. Algeria’s next match is against Senegal, whilst Kenya will play Tanzania. You can follow Algeria in English at AFCON 2019 with DZ Football.
