Algerian international midfielder Ismael Bennacer is set to sign for European giants AC Milan, according to Calcio Mercato.
Bennacer is currently away at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria, where he has been arguably the player of the tournament so far.
The central midfielder was relegated to Serie B this season with Empoli one year after helping them achieve promotion, but impressed many clubs nonetheless.
Fiorentina and Napoli also wanted to sign the 21-year-old. He came through the academy at Arsenal after being spotted by Arsene Wenger when playing in France.
Arsenal still had the option to match AC Milan’s offer as part of the buy-back clause, but the Gunners have chosen not to exercise this option.
Bennacer would become the third Algerian international to play for AC Milan, after Samir Beloufa and Djamel Mesbah.
He won the Man of the Match award in games against Kenya and against Senegal, and has started in all three group phase games and Algeria have won all three which saw the Desert Foxes make the last 16.
AC Milan have had Algerian players in the past, such as Djamel Mesbah. Follow all the Algerian football transfers in English this summer with DZ Football.
