Algeria set for huge Ivory Coast quarter-final

Algeria are ready for their biggest game in four and a half years as they take on Ivory Coast at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday 11th July at the Suez Stadium, with kick-off at 5pm.

The Desert Foxes have faced the Elephants in several recent AFCONs. Algeria’s previous quarter-final was back in 2015 when they lost 3-1 to Ivory Coast after a brace by Wilfried Bony.

Algeria did beat Ivory Coast 3-2 in AFCON 2010 after extra-time to reach the semi-finals. Riyad Mahrez will captain the side once again. Manager Djamel Belmadi is expected to name the same side that beat Guinea 3-0 although there could be a late twist that sees Adam Ounas start for the North Africans.

It will be the first game in Suez for Algeria, who have been based in Cairo for the first few games of the competition. Ivory Coast played their last 16 game in Suez. They already lost to a North African team at AFCON 2019 after losing 1-0 to Morocco in the group phase.

Wilfried Zaha will be a threat with two goals in his last two games on the wing. The winner will face Nigeria in the next round. Follow the Algerian national team in English this summer with DZ Football.
