Algerians one game away from Champions League final

Algerian club side USM Alger are just one game away from reaching the final of the CAF Champions League, as they travel to Morocco to face North African rivals Wydad Casablanca.

Wydad will host the red and black outfit on Saturday the 21st of October at the Stade Mohammed V, with kick-off at 8pm.

The two teams drew 0-0 in the first leg at the Stade du 5 Juillet, giving USMA a good opportunity to progress to their second continental final in three years.

Oussama Darfalou is USMA’s top scorer in the competition, with five goals, and was rewarded with a call-up to Algeria for his recent good form.

A win for Paul Put’s team, or a score draw, will put them into the final where they will play either Egyptian team Al Ahly or Tunisian team Etoile du Sahel, meaning a North African team will win Africa’s most prestigious club tournament.

USMA have not played club football for a while, and had four players on international duty with the Algerian national team so they decided to postpone their recent Ligue 1 DZ fixtures to a later date.

Casablanca are looking to reach their third CAF Champions League final in their entire history, previously reaching it in 1992 and 2011.

The winners of the competition will qualify for the Club World Cup, potentially facing the likes of Real Madrid.

Constantine go top of the Algerian table

Constantine have gone to the top of the Algerian league after an impressive victory against Biskra on Saturday.

Two goals from Mohamed Abid were enough to seal the three points, even though they were reduced to ten men after Ousmane Sylla was shown a straight red card.

Biskra did manage to pull one back through Boubacar Bagili, but it was too little, too late for the newly-promoted side who remain in the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Belouizdad and Saoura played out a 1-1 draw. Mounir Aichi gave the hosts the lead after 18 minutes, but the desert side equalised after Abdelkader Salhi’s penalty save fell to Moustapha Djallit to convert the rebound. CRB remain unbeaten in #Ligue1DZ.

Bel Abbes had a brilliant performance at the weekend, beating Kabylie 4-1 in a very convincing victory. Two goals from Abdennour Belhocini put the game to bed, although JSK did pull one back from the penalty spot.

However, Hoauri Ferhani was sent off in the second half and Bel Abbes went on to win comfortably with further goals from Belahouel and Kherbache.

Reigning champions Setif drew 0-0 to Medea, and Tadjenanet inflicted more misery on Blida after Mohamed Attouche’s fourth goal of the season means Blida are still bottom of the table with just one point and no wins.

Paradou got a point away to Hussein Dey in a 1-1 draw, and Oran left it late to score two goals in the last two minutes of their match against Harrach where they won 3-2. Harrach are still looking for their first win of the season.

Belouizdad top with perfect record so far

So after three matches in the 2017/18 Algerian league, we take a closer look at how the season has started in Algeria.

CR Belouizdad have begun fantastically, with three wins out of three so far and their 100% record means that they are top of the table. An impressive 2-0 win last week vs MC Alger means that they should perhaps be taken seriously as potential title challengers.

Saoura and Setif currently sit in 2nd and 3rd place, with both these teams winning two matches and drawing one. Kabylie, USM Alger and Tadjenant are the other three sides who are still unbeaten this campaign.

After being promoted, Paradou have started well with 4 points on the board despite losing two of their best players to European clubs (Youcef Attal and Tayeb Meziani).

At the other end of the league, Harrach, Biskra and Blida all currently occupy the relegation places with zero points. Biskra are the only team in the division not to have scored a goal all season, so they will need to improve their attack.

Belouizdad have the best attack, scoring 6 goals in 3 games, but it’s Tadjenant forward Mohamed Attouche who is the current top scorer with 3 goals.

Blida have the worst defence in the league, already letting in 8 goals and they will need to sort out their defence if they are to stay up this season and avoid relegation.
