Man City winger Mahrez pulls out of Algeria squad

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has pulled out of the Algeria squad and will not travel with the team to Botswana due to “family reasons”, DZ Football can confirm.

The right winger, who captained Algeria to a 5-0 win against Zambia on Thursday night grabbing an assist in the process, has no injury issues and will not be involved in the next game with the Desert Foxes.

Algeria began travelling to Gaborone on the other side of the continent on Friday morning and Mahrez was not photographed boarding the aircraft. It is a 6,117km trip to Botswana.

Mahrez captained the North Africans and assisted striker Baghdad Bounedjah for the fifth goal against Zambia in the first qualifier for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, playing the full 90 minutes in the process.

Speculation is rife as to why exactly Mahrez has withdrawn from the squad, however it has been well documented in recent weeks that the Algerian international has had off the field issues with his marriage.

Sofiane Feghouli will likely replace the Premier League champion on the right side. Botswana host Algeria on Monday afternoon in the second qualifier for AFCON 2021. Follow all the Algerian football news in English with DZ Football.
