Riyad Mahrez to start for Man City against Chelsea

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez will start in the Premier League this weekend against Chelsea, DZ Football understands.

Mahrez has not started any of the last four league games under Pep Guardiola since before the October international break. Leroy Sane is still out injured whilst Bernardo Silva will be serving a ban.

The African champion returned early from international duty and took part in extra training sessions in order to impress Guardiola and be ready to face Chelsea. Mahrez missed Algeria’s 6000km trip to Botswana in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The last time Mahrez scored against Chelsea was for Leicester City, which ultimately led to Jose Mourinho’s sacking by the West London club.

Mahrez has been assured of a start at the Etihad this weekend and must do his best to cement his place in the starting line-up. Follow all the Algerian football news in English with DZ Football.

Four Algerian players on shortlist for 2019 CAF Player of the Year

Four Algerian footballers have been nominated for CAF’s 2019 African Footballer of the Year, DZ Football understands.

Riyad Mahrez, Youcef Belaili, Baghdad Bounedjah and Ismael Bennacer have made the shortlist for Africa’s most prestigious individual award.

Mahrez, who won the award back in 2016 and was the last Algerian to win it, won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup as well as the Africa Cup of Nations and the Community Shield for club and country in 2019 making him a strong candidate for the award.

Belaili has been nominated after winning the most prestigious prizes for both club and country this year. He lifted the CAF Champions League with Esperance as well as the AFCON title. This has also led to him being a nominee for Best Africa Based Player 2019.

Ismael Bennacer was the Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2019 which led to him getting a big club move to giants AC Milan. Baghdad Bounedjah won several trophies with his club side Al Sadd as well as scoring the winner against Senegal in the final of AFCON 2019.

Manager Djamel Belmadi is also on the shortlist for Best African Coach 2019. Follow all the Algerian football news in English with DZ Football.

Man City winger Mahrez pulls out of Algeria squad

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has pulled out of the Algeria squad and will not travel with the team to Botswana due to “family reasons”, DZ Football can confirm.

The right winger, who captained Algeria to a 5-0 win against Zambia on Thursday night grabbing an assist in the process, has no injury issues and will not be involved in the next game with the Desert Foxes.

Algeria began travelling to Gaborone on the other side of the continent on Friday morning and Mahrez was not photographed boarding the aircraft. It is a 6,117km trip to Botswana.

Mahrez captained the North Africans and assisted striker Baghdad Bounedjah for the fifth goal against Zambia in the first qualifier for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, playing the full 90 minutes in the process.

Speculation is rife as to why exactly Mahrez has withdrawn from the squad, however it has been well documented in recent weeks that the Algerian international has had off the field issues with his marriage.

Sofiane Feghouli will likely replace the Premier League champion on the right side. Botswana host Algeria on Monday afternoon in the second qualifier for AFCON 2021. Follow all the Algerian football news in English with DZ Football.

Mahrez says Algeria are ready for AFCON 2019

Man City winger Riyad Mahrez has been reflecting on Algeria’s 3-2 win against Mali and is looking ahead to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

We feel physically better. As I said in the first game, we gradually build up. After organising his preparation, the manager insisted that we come here knowing that the conditions are similar to those that we will have in Egypt.

We will have no excuses against Kenya. We are ready for AFCON. We played against a very good team in the form of Mali. Scoring three goals is something important and uncommon. The last time we achieved that was against Togo. This is a very good thing but we are not carried away and we will stay focused because the next game against Kenya will be harder.

In this match, we played well in the first 20 minutes, then we dropped a little intensity. We conceded goals that we could have avoided. On the other hand, I think that we came back stronger in the second half. After the 70th minute , I think we managed to beat them and we could have ended up scoring four or five goals thanks to the opportunities we created.

Algerians in England set for FA Cup third round

The third round of the FA Cup is always an exciting weekend in the English sporting calendar, and several Algerians are set to be involved.

Saturday 5th January sees the holders Chelsea host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, which will surely be a tough test for midfielder Adlene Guedioura. However, Hilal Soudani will miss out due to injury.

Championship side Middlesbrough host Peterborough, where we could see a rare appearance in the first team for youngster Bilal Brahimi.

Brentford also host Oxford United, and there is no doubt that Said Benrahma will be wanting to taste the magic of the FA Cup for the first time. All three of these fixtures kick off at the classic time of 3pm.

On Sunday 6th January, Fulham host Oldham at 2pm where we could see Mohamed Maouche feature against Premier League opposition.

At the same time, Riyad Mahrez should feature for Manchester City as they take on Rotherham at the Etihad. Faisal Bettache will be hoping to make the squad for QPR’s game against Leeds.

And finally at 4.30pm, Rachid Ghezzal and Leicester City are off to Wales to face Newport County away. Follow how all the Algerian footballers get on with DZ Football.

Ghezzal and Guedioura start for Algeria but Man City star benched

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has been benched by the Algerian national team for today’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin.

Djamel Belmadi has made several changes from the 2-0 victory last Friday. There are starts for Leicester City winger Rachid Ghezzal and Nottingham Forest midfielder Adlene Guedioura.

Mahrez was the captain in the previous game but the armband has been passed onto Sofiane Feghouli of Galatasaray. Aissa Mandi will start at right-back in place of Youcef Attal.

Team in full: Rais M’Bolhi, Aissa Mandi, Mehdi Tahrat, Ramy Bensebaini, Mohamed Fares, Nabil Bentaleb, Adlene Guedioura, Rachid Ghezzal, Sofiane Feghouli, Yacine Brahimi, Ishak Belfodil.

Belfodil starts up front, after scoring in the Champions League in less than a minute against Man City two weeks ago in a 2-1 win for the Citizens.

Saphir Taider makes way for Guedioura and Yassine Benzia also drops out of the side. Algeria are unbeaten in their group so far. The match is taking place in Cotonou (Benin) and kick-off is at 4pm.

A win would take the Desert Foxes up to ten points from four matches. The other two teams in Group D are Togo and Gambia. You can follow the game live and in English with DZ Football.
